Brand Background
One Christmas Eve Michael Bond saw a lonely bear on a shelf in a department store and bought it as a present for his wife. They named him Paddington after the station in London as they lived in that area at the time. Michael started writing stories about the bear and within a short time had enough for a book. The first book A Bear Called Paddington was published in 1958 and has been followed by a further 11 novels and numerous picture and activity books. Today with over 70 titles available in more than 100 countries book sales are in excess of 35 million copies and they have been translated into 30 languages.
Paddington's adventures have been adapted several times for the small screen, most notably by Michael Bond himself in collaboration with Ivor Wood and FilmFair for the BBC in the 1970s. The series was acquired by HBO in the USA who also commissioned three half hour specials and a 2D animated series was created by Cinar in the 1990s.
While Paddington is a character created by Michael Bond, in the books he is very much a real bear who lives in the real world. He is kind, well-meaning and polite with a strong sense of right and wrong. Things happen to Paddington but no matter how horribly wrong a situation goes for him, things always turn out alright in the end. Paddington has become a well-known brand with thousands of different products available around the world.
